Latrobe Early Years News

In the coming weeks, your local families have an opportunity to join in a free hands-on session about babies, toddlers and their developing literacy. It’s a fantastic opportunity without having to travel too far. Minimum numbers are required for the training to occur, so I am asking for your help in the promotion of this. Feel free to share the flyer via newsletters, social media, or directly to interested families.

The training is being delivered in many locations around Latrobe Valley, starting with Glengarry, Traralgon, and Traralgon South, 10 + 11 March (see flyer for details). Yes, this is quite soon.

IMPORTANT: Families are able to attend sessions in other communities. They are not restricted to attending their nearest session.

Here is the full list for your planning. Other flyers will be distributed early next week.

The Free Lawn Mower Bank is a service operating out of Morwell Neighbourhood House, but was an idea and made possible by the efforts of St. Vincent De Paul.

The Lawn Mower is loaned to you at no charge. We supply the Lawn Mower, the fuel and Safety equipment. In return for this service, the Lawn Mower Bank has a few simple rules that need to be strictly followed.

Rules for Borrowing:

  • You are responsible for picking up and returning the Lawn Mower.

  • The Lawn Mower MUST be picked up by 10am.

International new economy expert speaks with community members

http://morwellnh.org.au/international-new-economy-expert-speaks-with-community-members/

“International new economy expert to speak with community members about a ‘Just Transition’ for the Latrobe Valley”

Internationally recognised author and new economy expert, Bob Massie, will be speaking alongside local speakers in a public forum in Morwell about creating new economic opportunities to benefit the community.

As outgoing president of the New Economy Coalition in the USA, Bob will be speaking about exciting international examples, and how Australia might benefit from a ‘just transition’ to new, cleaner economies.

One year on from the Hazelwood mine fire disaster, there are growing calls to diversify the local economy, and to create new industries and employment opportunities that pose less health risks to residents. The public forum, ‘A Just Transition for the Latrobe Valley?’, will examine the opportunities and barriers that the Latrobe Valley community faces in ensuring ongoing livelihoods and a healthy environment.

Local speakers – including representatives from Voices of the Valley, the Earthworker Cooperative and other organisations – will discuss concerns and potential options for the Latrobe Valley, including manufacturing, mine rehabilitation and community health. A Latrobe City Council speaker has also been invited.

“With the privatisation of the SEC, the Latrobe Valley lost thousands of jobs. It is vital that we have secure, meaningful and safe work for Latrobe Valley people into the future”, said CFMEU Mining and Energy Division President, Luke van der Muelen, who is interested to hear what Bob Massie’s talk might contribute. “We need clever thinking and ideas, but also proper planning, community consultation and real action.”

As Australia nears the end of the mining boom, as older coal power stations reach the end of their lives, and with the massive uptake of solar energy, there is increasing attention on how regional communities across the country can not only prepare for inevitable change, but choose what kind of economies might best serve them. Bob Massie has also been invited to speak in the Hunter Valley coal region in New South Wales, as well as in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.

“We know we can’t just shut down power stations tomorrow, because many families still depend on them. What we want is to protect the health and well-being of our community, and to see new industries and opportunities for the Latrobe Valley”, said Voices of the Valley President Wendy Farmer.

“We hope that the event provides some hope and inspiration about what’s possible, and sparks conversations about what a ‘just transition’ for the Latrobe Valley might look like”, said Earthworker Cooperative member, Colin Long. The Earthworker Cooperative, which has helped convene the event, is working to establish community-owned solar hot water manufacturing in Morwell.

The free public event will take place at the Morwell Bowling Club on Monday February 23rd, 6pm – 7:30pm. For more information, or to RSVP, go to: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/a-just-transition-for-the-latrobe-valley-tickets-15627841294

Unique at MNH - Borrow a free Lawn Mower

Unique at MNH – Borrow a free Lawn Mower

THE FREE Lawn Mower Bank at Morwell Neighbourhood House and Learning Centre is a unique borrowing initiative established to allow the community access to equipment to perform that sometimes challenging outdoor duty.

MNH’s lawn mowers are well maintained and available for pick up during the week between the Centre’s opening hours. Bookings are essential and usually made a week or two in advance.

Many people make use of the handy mower scheme, and comment on how much easier it has made life, keeping their property safer and more liveable, saving them from Council fines and embarrassment at not being able to maintain their property in a neat and tidy fashion. “I’ve borrowed from the lawn mower bank several times,” said local mother Kerry, who now let’s her children play in their yard without the annoyance of prickles and fear of broken items being hidden in the long grass. “My children need to play outside and to run around”.

A practical scheme, the Lawn Mower Bank is even group-planned so borrowers can use one car to pick it up from the Centre, get their lawn done and then share with a neighbour, elderly or less mobile user, which “kills two birds with one stone,” said Mark, a long-time Lawn Banking participant.

“I wasn’t able to mow my lawns before I started booking it (along with) with Stu. He has a car, and we use it to do his house, mine and my sisters. It’s great, because I actually love mowing the lawn”.

The Morwell Neighbourhood House Lawn Mower Bank is a one-off program not offered anywhere else “Our users respect our equipment and as long as the mowers are returned on time, we are all happy’’ said MNH Co-ordinator Tracie Lund.

‘‘People appreciate the scheme, and return to use it again and again’’.

For more information and to book use of a lawn mower, please phone Morwell Neighbourhood House on 5134 5488. MNH Term 1 Course Guides are also available for download at www.morwellnh.org.au.
