Champions of Morwell

http://morwellnh.org.au/champions-of-morwell/

Morwell Neighbourhood House is focusing on the unsung heroes of our community.  We have a launched a ‘Champions of Morwell’ Campaign.

We are asking the community to help us identify the true heroes of Morwell.  The anonymous people who are making a difference on a local level.  The person, people and groups who are making a significant but unrecognised contribution to our community.  The volunteer, the worker, your friends, and your family, we all know someone who goes above and beyond for their community.  We want to let them know that it all makes a difference.

Morwell Neighbourhood House will be sending THANK YOU cards to those who the community identifies to us.  So far we have sent out 35 cards.  We know there are far more unsung heroes in Morwell then that and we need your help to identify them all.  You can call us on 51345488 or email us.  We only need a name and postal address.  Thank-you.

Jackos send off RIP

On Friday the 20th of June 2014 Jack Brian Nankervis was tragically murdered..  Jack was a loving caring man. A son, a brothers, a father and a friend. In his 23 years of life Jack touched many many people’s life.  Jacks funeral was quoted at $10,000 for a basic service.  The $5000 is needed as a deposit.  We would never ask for handouts, but this was our last resort.  Thank you advance for your kindness and generosity.

Your Journey Through the Smoke

http://morwellnh.org.au/your-journey-through-the-smoke/

Your Journey Through the Smoke Workshop

Morwell’s Mine Fire experience was an event shared throughout the community.  It was also a significant event individually, for everyone involved, with each person’s account a worthy story in its own right.  The challenges of the fire and smoke produced a range of emotions, questions and unforgettable experiences.  We are holding a series of facilitated workshops to allow community residents in Morwell & surrounds to tell the story of their personal journey through the mine fire.

These workshop will assists the community to reflect on their experience and to be more aware of the feelings they have about the emergency.  This is an important opportunity the community needs as it faces the path to recovery.  The workshops will be opt in and out as you like.  We will offer a variety of means for participants to express themselves and tell their personal stories of their journey through the mine fire.  Ideas include photo collage of pics taken before/ during / after.  Poetry writing, story writing, power point, interviewing, verbal presentation & even recording.  Come along and share your story. Bring a friend. Mon 14/7 –15/8 12pm – 3pm

Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry concluded today

http://morwellnh.org.au/hazelwood-mine-fire-inquiry-concluded-today/

The Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry concluded today.  The public hearings and summaries have ended, but we will be waiting for the release of the final official report.

From now on, it is up to the board to focus on the report.  Once the final report is completed by the board, it will be presented to the Victorian Government at end of August 2014.   The Victorian Government will then present the report to the Victorian Premier.  The Victorian Premier will determine the timing of the report release by table-ling the report in the Victorian Parliament.  Copies will be available through the Victorian Government and through the Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry website.

The board will not make any comments about the likely conclusions or recommendations prior to the final reports delivery.

If you want to listen to any of the public hearings (except Day 2), simply click on this link.

Morwell Neighbourhood House will be keeping an eye out for the official Hazelwood Mine Fire final report and we will let you know as soon as the report is available.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Morwell Neighbourhood House on 5134-5488 or send us an e-mail.  Thank-you.

Hazelwood mine fire inquiry hearings draw to a close

http://morwellnh.org.au/hazelwood-mine-fire-inquiry-hearings-draw-close/

Today the Board of Inquiry completes its rigorous examination into the events and circumstances of the Hazelwood mine fire that resulted in so much community confusion and concern.

Public hearings were held over 14 days and attended by more than 700 community members and representatives from various organisations and government departments.

‘We are delighted to have heard from so many different people with varying backgrounds and experiences including firefighters, mine workers, expert witnesses and community members’ said the chair of the Board of Inquiry, Justice Bernard Teague.

‘We have placed great emphasis on openness during the hearings process and now it is time to turn our minds to our report and recommendations for change’.

Board members Ms Sonia Petering and Prof. John Catford joined Justice Teague in thanking many individuals and organisations for their contributions.

‘First we would like to thank the Morwell and Latrobe Valley community for welcoming us with open arms and for sharing their stories and local knowledge through hearings, community consultations and written submissions’, they said.

‘Our thanks also to those who helped set up our office and hearings room in Morwell — we hope it has been a rewarding experience for everyone involved and we are extremely grateful for everyone’s assistance’.

The Board of Inquiry will  hear final submissions from parties granted leave to appear on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. Presentations will begin at 10.00 am in the Auditorium at 20 Hazelwood Road in Morwell. Members of the public are welcome to attend.

The Board is due to submit its report and recommendations to the Victorian Government by the end of August 2014.
